Intuit shows off MicroMint concept app for the WIMM One smartwatch, we go hands-on

Given the amount of time we spent with the WIMM One smartwatch, you'd think we would have had enough fodder for a full-blown review. Alas, though, one critical piece was missing: apps. Not test apps, like a balance ball game, but honest to goodness apps from major third-party developers. Well, we got a chance to check out a concept app from Intuit, the company behind Mint.com (no TurboTax for this 1.41-inch display, sorry).

What can we say? When a device has a screen this tiny, the elevator pitch is going to be mighty brief. Here's how MicroMint works: just swipe left to right to see your balances for different accounts. There's no limit to how many it can display, and when you reach the end of the list, the app will just start cycling through again. As you can see in the video demo below, the app's performance is limited by the watch's 667MHz ARM11 CPU and 256MB RAM, which is to say you'll notice some lag as you swipe from one bank balance to another. And that's it. This is all the app does; don't expect to take advantage of Mint's other features, like budget-planning and mapping out savings goals (not that you'd want any graphs or itemized lists crammed onto that 160x160 screen).

For now, of course, this concept app is just that, a prototype. Intuit won't commit to releasing it, much less share any sort of timeline. Interestingly, though, David Siegel on Intuit's development team suggested to us that the app might be of more use when WIMM releases its next-gen watch with NFC. With that radio on board, he says, the app could potentially allow not just for balance-checking, but credit card payments as well. Additionally, the outfit is mulling a similar app for the Sony SmartWatch, which also runs Android and supports Java-based apps. The only development hiccup, he says, would be adapting the app for Sony-specific APIs. That's a whole lot of ifs for one paragraph, though, so for now we'll leave you with a super quick hands-on video, just past the break.

My low tech visual aid will be a print-out of how a nuclear reactor works. If I ca I will, instead, display how a newer, more efficient reactor initiates fission or fusion thereby producing energy. This visual is meant to bring the audience up to speed- a crash course in nuclear physics so to speak. Not everyone is familiar with nuclear energy and more so they are critically unaware of the incredible potential of nuclear energy. The goal of the visual is to provide understanding and support what my research report is about. I will be discussing the benefits of nuclear energy and the possibility of the United States one day reducing its dependency on foreign oil and relying on domestic nuclear energy.

FairPoint Continues to Improve Operations | Virtual-Strategy Magazine

CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?FairPoint Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq CM: FRP) continues to improve its operations.

"We're making good operational gains and we are proud of the 8.4 percent gain in broadband subscribers in 2011 ? the highest percentage gain among our industry peers," said FairPoint CEO Paul Sunu.

Earlier this month, FairPoint offered employees, who are members of the Communications Workers of America, an opportunity to take advantage of early retirement incentives. Forty-six employees were accepted for this voluntary retirement program, which takes effect March 30. The company believes this effort will result in expected annualized operating expense savings of approximately $3.8 million, with the full benefit realized in 2013. The company expects to provide severance or incentive payments of approximately $2.3 million.

Additionally, FairPoint is expecting to realize further savings by consolidating operational functions. Thirty-two non-represented employees will be leaving the company as their positions are eliminated. The expected result is annualized operating expense savings of approximately $2.8 million and severance payments of approximately $400,000.?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Facing a conservative backlash, House Republicans are working to change a new law that allows the indefinite detention without trial of terrorist suspects, even U.S. citizens seized within the nation's borders.

Republicans and Democratic lawmakers said this week that the GOP majority on the House Armed Services Committee was weighing several proposals to revise the provision on indefinite detention that was part of the far-reaching defense bill that Congress passed in December and President Barack Obama signed into law.

Last year, Congress' approach to handling terror suspects divided Republicans and Democrats, pitted the White House against lawmakers and drew fierce opposition from civil liberties groups. The anger still lingers, and GOP leaders are under pressure from a number of rank-and-file members, tea partyers and libertarians to change the law.

"I intend to help put as much political pressure on this issue as possible," said Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., whose staff has spoken to the Armed Services panel. "I intend to spend a lot of time ? and I already have been doing so ? making the public aware of this issue so we can get the change we need to address it."

Officials for the committee led by Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., had no comment on the possible changes to be included in a defense bill, which could be completed this summer. The discussions are preliminary, but one possibility is greater review for those detained indefinitely, said Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state, the committee's top Democrat.

Conservatives fear that the detention provision could result in unfettered power for the federal government, allowing it to detain American citizens indefinitely for even a one-time contribution to a humanitarian group that's later linked to terrorism. They argue that would be a violation of long-held constitutional rights. Also disconcerting to the GOP is the reality that the current government is led by Democrat Obama.

Several Democrats also have criticized the provision as an example of government overreach and an unnecessary obstacle to the administration's war against terrorism, creating an unusual political coalition in Congress.

In the months since the bill became law, some Republicans who backed the legislation have been challenged at town halls and other meetings with constituents, a turn of events that unnerves the GOP.

"There clearly has been some blowback and that's what the Republicans are trying to address," Smith said.

The indefinite detention provision denies suspected terrorists, including U.S. citizens seized within the nation's borders, the right to trial and subjects them to the possibility they would be held indefinitely. It reaffirms the post-Sept. 11 authorization for the use of military force that allows indefinite detention of enemy combatants. In hopes of quelling the furor, lawmakers added language that said nothing in the law may be "construed to affect existing law or authorities relating to the detention of United States citizens, lawful resident aliens of the United States, or any other persons who are captured or arrested in the United States."

When Obama signed the bill on Dec. 31, he issued a statement saying he had serious reservations about provisions on the detention, interrogation and prosecution of suspected terrorists. Such signing statements are common and allow presidents to raise constitutional objections to circumvent Congress' intent.

"My administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens," Obama said in the signing statement. "Indeed, I believe that doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a nation."

In February, the Obama administration outlined new rules on when the FBI, rather than the military, could be allowed to retain custody of al-Qaida terrorism suspects who aren't U.S. citizens but are arrested by federal law enforcement officers. The new procedures spelled out seven circumstances in which the president could place a suspect in FBI, rather than military, custody, including a waiver when it could impede counterterrorism cooperation with another government or when it could interfere with efforts to secure an individual's cooperation or confession.

But that's not sufficient for some lawmakers.

Smith and Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., have introduced legislation that would repeal the provision on indefinite detention and reverse the mandatory military custody for foreign terrorist suspects linked to al-Qaida or its affiliates and involved in plotting or attacking the United States.

"I will continue to push that bill," Smith said in an interview. "I know the majority is also putting together some ideas. They're very process-focused. ... I have not seen specifics of that proposal yet and we'll talk to them about it, but obviously I have a much stronger position on that and think that we don't need to have indefinite detention or military custody for the people in the U.S."

Amash is determined to change the law, using town halls in his district and the long reach of Facebook to get his message out. He said many Republicans voted for the defense bill in December after they were promised that legislation fixing the provision would be introduced after Christmas. He's still waiting.

"What I've seen from members of Armed Services Committee is basically an attempt to justify the language as it stands," Amash said. "And considering the extent to which they've dug in their heels on this issue, I'd be surprised if they're actually going to make a real and credible change to the language."

The St Louis foreclosure rate was 1.7 percent for February 2012, the same rate as a year before according to newly released data from CoreLogic. As usual, the St Louis foreclosure rate is significantly lower than the national foreclosure rate, which was 3.4 percent in February 2012.

The St Louis mortgage delinquency rate, the precursor to foreclosures, also remained flat in February from the year before at 5.0 percent.? Like the foreclosure rate, the St Louis mortgage delinquency rate is also significantly below the national mortgage delinquency rate which was 7.3 percent in February.

LG unveils flexible plastic e-paper display, aims for European launch next month

LG has made no secret of its fondness for flexible e-paper, but those dreams became a reality today, with the announcement of a six-inch display that promises to "revolutionize the e-book market." The malleable plastic display sports a resolution of 1024 x 768 and can bend at an angle of up to 40 degrees. At just 0.7 millimeters thick, it's about one-third thinner than similarly-specced glass displays, and weighs in at 14 grams -- more than half as light as its glassy competition. LG also claims that the display is super durable, as evidenced by a series of successful drop tests from a height of 1.5 meters. The plan going forward is to supply the display to ODMs in China, in the hopes of bringing final products to Europe by "the beginning of next month." Mad Maks? Nope, 'DWTS' pro 'knows the score'

"Dancing" pro Maks kept calm as the judges nitpicked his partner Melissa Gilbert's first performance on March 19.

As many "Dancing With the Stars" fans -- including yours truly?-- noticed last Monday night, hoofer hopeful Melissa Gilbert endured unusually tough criticism and low scores after putting on a strong first dance of the season. And that hardly seemed like random ballroom happenstance, given that her partner is Maksim Chmerkovskiy -- aka the easy-on-the-eyes pro who's had anything but easy relations with the judges over the past few seasons.

So, if the early bout of nitpicking and questionable scores came across as unfair to some outsiders, then surely the man sometimes referred to as ballroom's bad boy was mad about it. Right?

Wrong.

"He wasn't that angry -- at least not visibly," a show insider revealed to TODAY.com. "(Maks) kept his cool. He just shrugged it off and said, 'It is what it is.' He understands how the judges regard him. He knows the score."

The score, according to the source, is that while the judges consider themselves impartial, Maks, and his partner du jour, might just have a harder time pleasing them than a seemingly preferred pro such as Derek Hough or Kym Johnson. After all, past problems aren't so easy to forget.

"Carrie Ann (Inaba) was genuinely offended by some of his comments -- on and off the show-- last season. But in (Maks') defense, he was offended by her comments (about partner Hope Solo's performances), too. And (Len) Goodman has had his own issues with him," the insider told us.

As for judge Bruno Tonioli, he's said to be a "bit more neutral."

Well, there's that. But what about the powers-that-be-behind the scenes? Do the producers have a problem with the pro?

"No," the insider insisted. "They love what he brings to the show."

Of course, despite Maks' comments last season, in which he declared that it was his show -- not that he meant it that way -- there are others on the dance floor this season -- like the stars. And so far, according to the source, they seem to be a friendly, scandal-free bunch.

"It's a good group of people" the show source told us. "Everyone likes each other. No scandals, no problems.?... I think the press tried to stir up a scandal about Sherri (Shepherd), saying she cheated, but I've seen no signs on anyone actually taking stock in that talk."

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Arnold Palmer is being hospitalized overnight after doctors noticed a rise in his blood pressure.

Palmer wasn't on the 18th green at Bay Hill on Sunday when Tiger Woods won the Arnold Palmer Invitational for the seventh time, ending a 30-month victory drought on the PGA Tour.

Alaistair Johnston, vice chairman of IMG and Palmer's longtime business manager, says the 82-year-old is on new medication and was checking his blood pressure throughout the final round. About 15 minutes before the tournament ended, doctors noticed enough of an increase to take him to the hospital for closer evaluation.

Johnston says Palmer was to be hospitalized overnight as a precaution. He says no one is overly concerned.

1. Limit your work hours. Put balance into your life by limiting the time spent at your vocation. During seasons where working more hours could have potentially increased my income, I set work time limits.

   I did what I could do within that time and trusted God for the results (see Psalm 127:2). I went home for dinner most nights and rarely did I work on weekends.

2. Extend your magic number. I stopped thinking retiring at age sixty-five was normal. The fixed retirement age concept came into being in the 1930s when life expectancy was around sixty-three.

   The truth is man was created to be productive and at age sixty-five, we just might be healthier and more fulfilled if we keep right on working.

   Extending your retirement time horizon will slow down the pace of life. You won?t be in a hurry to quit. You might find you can also free up funds earmarked for retirement for use on family vacations or to pay down current debt.

Young Vito, the rapper who police say shot and killed Waka Flocka associate Slim Dunkin in an Atlanta recording studio in December 2011, was indicted by a grand jury in Georgia on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old Vito, born Vinson Hardimon, was indicted on charges of murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony. Initially it was reported that Slim Dunkin was murdered in an argument that started over a piece of candy. Now it is being reported that Hardimon and Dunkin, born Mario Hamilton, fought over recording time. After a scuffle, Hamilton was shot in the chest and was transported to Grady Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Dunkin was an emerging talent in Waka Flocka Flame's Brick Squad Monopoly crew. He appeared alongside Waka on his 2010 debut album, Flockaveli, and on Gucci Mane and V-Nasty's BAYTL LP last year. Slim also had a number of solo mixtape releases. Last Halloween he dropped Menace II Society, a 20-track mixtape that featured Gucci Mane, Roscoe Dash and Pastor Troy.

The day after Dunkin's death, via Twitter. "WISH IT WAS ME ... MY F---ING RIGHT HAND IS GONE," Flocka wrote.

The "O Let's Do It" MC continued to vent over Twitter, writing, "Damn I feel dead" and "IM LOST" in reaction to the tragic news. A trial date for Young Vito has not been set.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Apple made computers sexy. Can it do the same for the musty old dividend?

Issuing a regular payment to your stockholders after years of just amassing cash used to be an admission that your company has run out of creative ideas to grow profits.

The quarterly check for a buck or two was more associated with staid utilities than sleek tech companies.

"It wasn't sexy," says John Buckingham, chief investment officer at Al Frank Asset Management. "Now the cool guy is doing it."

Apple said Monday that it would begin paying a quarterly dividend of $2.65 per share starting this summer after years of resisting the idea. Its late former CEO, Steve Jobs, always thought the company could make better use of its cash.

But the hoard of cash and securities grew so large ? $97.6 billion, more than the entire market value of all but 15 companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 ? that Apple had no use for it.

So it took the risk of looking like a fuddy-duddy and reversed its policy. Apple also announced that it planned to buy back $10 billion worth of its stock in the next fiscal year, which begins in October.

Investors pushed the stock up 2.7 percent Monday to $601.10. That's on top of a 37 percent gain since the company first hinted in January that a dividend may be coming.

Perhaps the rise in Apple stock isn't surprising. After years of pulling money out of stocks, investors are cautiously returning, but they're demanding dividend payments. Three-quarters of the $3.6 billion that investors added to stock funds in February went to funds specializing in dividend-paying companies.

One reason for the buying is that many of the alternatives for generating cash are so unattractive lately.

The interest payments on money market accounts, CDs, and many Treasury securities are next to nothing. For the S&P 500, the dividend yield, which measures annual payouts to shareholders against a company's stock price, is 2.04 percent ? at least close to keeping up with inflation.

Another appeal of dividends is that they are taxed at 15 percent, like a capital gain, instead of at income tax rates, as they were previously. The top marginal income tax rate is 35 percent. Dividends are scheduled to be taxed at income rates again starting next year, after the Bush-era tax cuts expire.

It wasn't so long ago that a dividend announcement by a tech company was perceived as a kiss of death.

When Microsoft announced its first dividend in 2003, some investors feared it was a sign that its best days were behind it. Judging from its stock, which has gone nowhere for most of the past nine years, they turned out to be right.

Cisco, whose stock price hasn't moved much since the end of the dot-com craze a decade ago, finally decided to issue a dividend last year. Amazon and Google still don't pay a dividend. Neither does Dell, which has been around for a generation.

Tim Holland, portfolio manager at Tamro Capital, says a dividend is seen as "taboo" for many companies, but he likes Apple's decision.

He says the main attraction for him is the company's proven ability to grow earnings fast ? Apple increased profit 85 percent in the last fiscal year ended Sept. 30 ? and that investors apparently don't believe it can keep doing so.

Holland says that if they had more faith, the stock wouldn't be trading at a cheap 13.1 times expected earnings over the next year. The so-called price-to-earnings ratio of companies in the S&P 500 has averaged 15 or 16 over the decades.

It makes sense to buy for that reason, he says: "The company keeps delivering."

For the coming fiscal year ending Sept. 30, Apple is expected to increase earnings by nearly 60 percent, according to a survey of analysts by FactSet, a research firm.

"Their earnings growth is reliable," says Shaw Wu, an analyst at Sterne, Agee & Leech and another Apple fan. "And they're still an innovative, cutting-edge company."

Had it held on to the money, Apple could have faced legal challenges from shareholders arguing that the company was misusing their money.

The dividend will come to $10.60 per year, or 1.8 percent of Apple's stock price. Microsoft pays a dividend yield of 2.5 percent, Hewlett-Packard 2 percent. Utilities often pay 5 percent or more.

In dollar terms, it will be one of the richest dividends in investing. Apple will pay $10 billion in the first year, placing it just below AT&T and Verizon Communications. Those companies use dividends as their main attraction to investors.

In Apple's case, Jeffrey Snider, president of Atlantic Capital Management, an investment management company, sees the decision to offer a dividend as a possible omen, accidental or otherwise.

He says technology changes too quickly for leaders in one industry to stay on top for long, citing the once dominant companies like AOL, Yahoo and Research in Motion.

Apple can't keep iPads on the shelf now, but there was a time when the BlackBerry looked unbeatable, too. You would have lost a lot of money betting that would continue. Research in Motion stock has dropped 90 percent from its peak nearly four years ago.

"No one thinks this can happen to Apple," he says. But he adds: "This could be the beginning of the end of their growth story."
