Homes from 'Rocky' and legendary sports movies

?Many sports movie scenes take place on a field, in a dugout, post game in a locker room or coach's office. But in between great plays and dramatic scores, many of the films feature shots of houses as well.

From the gritty house featured in "The Fighter" to the classic 1950s rambler in "The Sandlot," here's a real estate tour through sports films.

"Rocky"

Usually near the top of any list of greatest sports films, "Rocky" garnered a devoted following, three Oscars and five sequels. Rocky Balboa's apartment in an urban Philadelphia building was an iconic part of the first film.

Located at 1818 E Tusculum St., Philadelphia,?seen above, the brick building showcased iconic scenes between the boxer and his girlfriend, Adrian, as well as his manager, Mickey. Built in 1920, the residence today is listed as a three-bedroom, one-bath condo measuring 754 square feet.

"The Sandlot"

The classic children's film "The Sandlot" documents the summertime antics of a neighborhood's ragtag baseball team. Set in the 1960s, most of the 1993 film takes place in the empty lot where the boys play baseball, but one character's classic rambler home is briefly spotted.

Built in 1956, the home at 1556 S 2000 E, Salt Lake City, pictured above, was last sold in 2009 in near original condition. Complete with green shag carpet, leaded-glass diamond-pane windows, beamed ceiling and brass light fixtures, the home looks just as it did 1960. The four-bedroom, three-bath Salt Lake City home sits on a quarter-acre lot and has 1,632 square feet of living space.

With nine fireplaces, three stories, full basement and five bedrooms, the house at 612 N Main St, Henderson?was more than roomy enough to host the movie's baseball team.

NEW YORK (AP) ? As a Republican National Convention speaker, vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan isn't nearly as much of a draw as Sarah Palin.

The Nielsen ratings company said an estimated 21.9 million people watched GOP convention coverage Wednesday night over nine networks. The marquee event was Ryan's acceptance speech as Mitt Romney's running mate.

More than 40 million people watched Palin's acceptance speech at the 2008 convention. Nielsen estimated an audience of 37.2 million in 2008 for all the networks except PBS, which pegged its audience at 3.9 million based on a slightly less complete Nielsen sample.

For the second night in a row, Fox News Channel had more viewers than anyone else covering the convention Wednesday. Fox had 7.7 million viewers during the 10 p.m. EDT hour, when all the networks were competing. NBC had 4.1 million, ABC 2.9 million, CBS 2.6 million, MSNBC 1.4 million and CNN 1.3 million.

Ryan, 42, did give a slight bump to the young viewership. Nielsen said an estimated 2.1 million people aged 18 to 34 watched Wednesday's coverage, up from 1.5 million the night before.

Overall, Wednesday's convention viewership was down slightly from the 22.3 million who watched Tuesday, the opening night.

Dear Simple,
A home file server can be extremely useful for backing up your computer, streaming media, and a lot of other things. If you have an old computer lying around, that'll work fine?but if you don't have one (or you want to build something more low-powered), you have a few choices. We won't lay out any specific builds, but here are some ideas that you can use as a starting point for your build. For more information on picking out parts, check out our Night School lesson on the subject.

Home Server Basics: Bargain Hunting Is Key

Unlike regular desktop computers, home servers don't need a lot of power to run. In fact, if you're using something like FreeNAS, you'll be fine with even the lowest-powered desktop processors on the market today. That means you're better off bargain hunting than worrying about power?the cheaper, the better, since it'll all be enough power to run your home server. Just make sure you're buying from good, reliable brands, and you'll probably be fine.

When it comes to hard drives, I usually like to go with one of the "green" models, since they're low-power and quiet. Good choices include Western Digital's Caviar Green line, Samsung's EcoGreen line, and Seagate's Barracuda Green line. What size you buy and how many of each are up to you?I generally like to keep my drives separated by purpose, meaning I have a 2 TB drive for my media, a 2 TB drive for backup, and a 500GB drive for torrenting.

Option One: Small, But More Costly

If you want to build something as compact as possible, you'll want to go with a motherboard that uses the "Mini-ITX" form factor. At the time of this writing, the cheapest Mini-ITX motherboards are about $50, and the cheapest compatible processors are also about $50. RAM will be about $30, depending on how much you want (2GB is fine for a FreeNAS machine, 4GB is probably ideal for Ubuntu).

So far, that isn't too expensive. Unfortunately, Mini-ITX cases are what makes this build more costly. You can get a lot of server-oriented, Mini-ITX case/power supply combos for as low as $50, but they only come with one drive bay. If that's all you need, then this is a great option?but it doesn't leave you any room for expandability, and if you have multiple drives, you're out of luck.

A multi-drive server case like this one (shown above) is an awesome choice, and while it'll run you about $140, it's small, quiet, and has room for four hot-swap drives. That brings the total cost of your home server up to about $270 without the drives. If you have the money to spend, this is probably the best route.

Option Two: Bigger, But Cheap

If you don't want to spend that much money, you can do what I did and buy literally the cheapest parts you can find. Unfortunately, that means you'll probably have to go with a MicroATX form factor, which is a bit bigger than Mini-ITX. The processors and motherboards are only mildly cheaper?about $40 each for an AMD build?but the cases are much, much cheaper, running as low as $40 for a "Mini Tower" case/power supply combo (shown above). If you have multiple drives, you'll be able to fit as many as you want in a MicroATX case without a problem?you'll just need to make sure you have room in your house to store it, since it'll be closer to the size of a computer tower (albeit a small one). However, it makes for a pretty cheap home server at $150.

In the end, it's all about two things: cost and size. You'll need to decide which is more important to you, and then pick your parts based on that. Pennsylvania judge halts Harrisburg's incinerator debt payments

(Reuters) - A Pennsylvania judge on Monday ordered Harrisburg, the state's cash-strapped capital, to suspend debt service payments on its troubled incinerator and to implement a 1 percent tax hike.

Commonwealth Court Judge Bonnie Leadbetter ruled that the city should not make any further debt payments on its waste-to-energy incinerator - which helped plunge the city into at least $320 million in debt - until further notice.

An attorney for Harrisburg's state-appointed receiver, William Lynch, said during a court hearing last week that the city would be $500,000 in the hole if it made a $3.4 million debt service payment due in September.

Leadbetter also ordered the city council to enact a 1 percent hike on residents' earned income within 15 days. The increase, which city council members were fighting, is temporary but effective immediately upon implementation, for at least one year.

Revenue generated from the tax hike can only be used to fund essential city services, she ruled.

The tax hike was a key provision of Lynch's recovery plan for the city, which is under state oversight. Leadbetter is overseeing the implementation of the plan.

"We hope this will lead to some real cooperation with City Council as we go forward," Lynch said in a statement.

Leadbetter shot down one other provision of the plan that called for the city to hire a communications director at an annual salary of $75,000.

When writing dialogue, writers often forget that characters speak differently. It?s understandable how this is missed so often. You?ve read all the great books on screenwriting: Robert McKee, Syd Field, Blake Snyder, etc., and you know that on page 19 ?this? must happen and you know all the archetypes of character and you have spent months perfecting your story and then they speak and it all falls apart. This is the same for television. You have taken all the great TV writing course around, you have read all the books, watched countless hours of your favorite shows and even managed to write a few specs, and then your characters speak in your original pilot and they might as well be the same person. This is very common, so don?t feel bad, we have all been there.

There are many ways you can fix this problem.

- First of all, have your script read by other writers and, if they don?t give you character feedback, then ask for it.

- Have your script read out loud; you need to hear how your characters sound.

- Watch both film and television.

- Go to plays.

- Read books.

- Observe people in your every day life and start making note of how they speak and what they say. Does your brother start every sentence with ?dude? and, if so, what does that tell us about him?

It is also essential to study great films and read the scripts. There are many resources out there for scripts online, one of my favorites is Simply Scripts. Any screenplays by: Cameron Crowe, the Coen Brothers, Quentin Tarantino, and/or Woody Allen is a good place to start. Their characters have very specific ways of speaking. The Windows SmartScreen feature is enabled by default and is designed to tell end users whether the application they have downloaded from the internet is safe to install on their machine. It does this by gathering some info upon opening the installer, sending it to Microsoft and then waiting for a response to see if said installer has a valid certificate. As Kobeissi mentions, this means information about every single application downloaded and installed is sent to Microsoft.

He dug further to discover the information sent could potentially be intercepted by a malicious hacker, as Microsoft uses an "outdated and insecure" method of HTTPS?encrypted?communications. If a hacker did manage to steal all the information on a user's application installation habits, they could make a profile of the user and use that to find other exploitable weaknesses.

The issue with SmartScreen is currently only prevalent in Windows 8 as it's the first time Microsoft has integrated SmartScreen at an OS level (Windows 7 only features SmartScreen in applications like Internet Explorer). You can disable SmartScreen so you are no longer reporting your installation habits to Microsoft, but this is apparently not easy to do and results in periodic nags to re-enable it.

Chances are Microsoft will not do anything about their implementation of SmartScreen, so as it stands now it could be a privacy and security risk.

Tom Cruise At London Club For Connor's DJ Gig

Contrary to popular belief, Tom Cruise has a kid other than Suri Cruise. Actually he has two, Connor and Isabella with whom he adopted with his ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

17-year-old Connor Cruise like most L.A. teens is a ?DJ? which is like the most common career in Hollywood aside from being unemployed.

Anyway, the young celeb offspring played a DJ set at UK nightclub Chinawhite and his famous dad Tom stopped by the club to watch his son?s DJ gig.

However, Tom fooled paparazzi by sneaking out a back door after the show. A back room of the club actually shared a door with a tacky tourist gift shop so Tom exited the nightclub on an entirely different street where very few paparazzi were waiting.

Connor exited through the front doors with his sister Isabella and two non-famous teen girls and hopped into a waiting cab.

Apparently since Connor is only 17 and I don?t know what Scientology says about alcohol consumption, Tom reportedly had the DJ booth strictly controlled so no alcohol came in or out.

It should be noted that this is the very first time that Tom has seen his son do a DJ set. However, a source with the club Chinawhite says that there is a rule that anyone under the age of 18 must have parental guidance at the club and since Connor is only 17, it seems like Tom was forced to be there, because we all know Nicole Kidman would never.

Connor is now moving onto Zurich in Switzerland to continue his European club tour circuit. We'll see if Tom shows up for this one as well.

Syria army recaptures Aleppo heart as fighting rages

The Syrian army recaptured three Christian neighbourhoods in the historic heart of Aleppo from rebels Thursday but fierce clashes continued in other parts of the main northern city, residents said.

Loyalists forces also battled rebels in Damascus, shelling districts and storming houses, after launching a ferocious assault to try to reinforce its hold on the capital, activists said.

The West stepped up the pressure on President Bashar al-Assad's government, with Britain joining the United States in warning it against using its chemical weapons in a conflict that shows no sign of ending after more than 17 months of bloodshed.

Washington is also ramping up its military presence in the region, dispatching a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to deal with "threats" from Iran and the turmoil in Syria.

Aleppo residents spoke of heavy exchanges in the heart of the city during the army's offensive to recapture neighbourhoods seized by the rebels at the weekend.

"We have had the worst two days of our lives," said Sonia, the wife of a wealthy businessman in the northern city told AFP.

"If our house weren't built like a fortress, we'd all be dead. The entrance is very badly damaged."

Rebels had seized control of three Christian quarters of the Old City of Aleppo during the weekend, including Jdeide and Telal, once frequented by tourists for their restaurants and handicraft shops.

The rebel Free Syrian Army had also seized the nearby neighbourhood of Sulamaniyeh, most of whose inhabitants are Armenian Christians.

The neighbourhood is home to some ancient monasteries and a cathedral of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church.

"Battles on Monday and Tuesday were very violent, and they lasted for many long hours before the army managed to expel the rebels," a resident of the neighbourhood told AFP by telephone.

"After cleansing the area, hundreds of residents of the districts of Telal and Sulamaniyeh took to the streets to celebrate and express their support for the army," he added.

After the rebels' expulsion, residents set up "popular committees" to prevent their return, another resident told AFP.

Communities like those in the heart of Aleppo are among those in which support for Assad's government and suspicion of the rebels runs highest.

But in the southern belt of Damascus, where fighting also raged on Thursday, opposition to the the government runs high.

"Parts of Damascus look like Gaza, with the army deployed on the outside, setting up major checkpoints, but unable to get in," said a Damascus resident and opposition activist who identified herself as Samara.

"Fear is everywhere," Samara told AFP via Skype. "Most people in the violence-stricken areas are stuck in their homes."

The army shelled the south Damascus district of Al-Hajar Al-Aswad, scene of bitter fighting last month, as well as the town of Daraya, on the capital's outskirts, for a second day in a row, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"The situation in Daraya is tragic," said Abu Kinan, an activist based in the suburb of sonme 200,000 people. "I am alive now, but they are shelling non-stop. Death is everywhere."

At least 41 people were reported killed in Damascus on Wednesday alone after troops backed by combat helicopters and tanks attacked several areas in the southern belt where anti-regime sentiment is strong, the Observatory said.

It was some of the worst violence since the army claimed to have reclaimed most of the capital a month ago.

"Regime forces are carrying out summary executions and destroying the homes of their opponents in a bid to crush the revolt once and for all," said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.

An activist who gave his name as Omar told AFP from the Damascus district of Qaboon, which was the scene of heavy fighting on Wednesday, that the army and the rebels were playing a game of "cat and mouse."

"The army's attempts cannot succeed, because they cannot get into the neighbourhoods where the Free Syrian Army are hiding," he said.

Turkish and US officials began their first "operational planning" meeting aimed at hastening the end of Assad's embattled regime. Turkey has given shelter to the rebel leadership as well as tens of thousands of vilian refugees.

Turkish foreign ministry deputy under-secretary Halit Cevik and US ambassador Elisabeth Jones led the delegations made up of intelligence agents, military officials and diplomats at the Ankara talks, a foreign ministry source told AFP.

The officials were to discuss contingency plans in the case of potential threats including a chemical attack by Assad's regime which Washington has said would be a "red line".

British Prime Minster David Cameron and US President Barack Obama warned after a Wednesday telephone call that they would be forced to consider a new course of action if Syria threatened to use chemical weapons against rebel fighters.

The two leaders agreed that the use of chemical weapons -- which Syria admitted possessing in July -- would be "completely unacceptable."

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said the United States was preparing for "threats" from Iran and Syria's turmoil as an aircraft carrier headed to the region ahead of schedule.

The Observatory said that nearly 25,000 people have now been killed in Syria since March 2011. The UN puts the death toll at around 17,000.
