Satellite launch stirs passions before Venezuela vote

CARACAS (Reuters) - President Hugo Chavez said the launch on Friday of Venezuela's second satellite showed the achievements of his self-styled revolution just days before he seeks re-election, but his rival said it symbolized his neglect of problems closer to home.

"We're seeing history ... . Venezuela has been with China at the forefront of history," Chavez said after standing to applaud during a video link-up between the presidential palace, a launch center in China's Gobi Desert and a Caracas street party.

As campaigning in the close election race approaches its final week in South America's biggest oil exporter, both political camps are planning their last huge rallies while making last-minute efforts to win over undecided voters.

Opposition candidate Henrique Capriles has mocked Chavez, who he says is focused on spreading his socialist project around the world but has done little to address the daily problems of voters such as crime, power cuts and inflation.

A dozen Venezuelan officials were at China's Jiuquan launch center, near the Mongolian border, to watch the rocket carrying the "Miranda" satellite blast off into a clear blue sky.

Venezuelan state TV had broadcast hours of build-up alongside the headline "Space Revolution ... a Sovereign View."

For Capriles, it was a prime example of what he calls grandiose plans that prove Chavez is out of touch with voters.

"How many Venezuelans sleep in a refuge tonight? How many towns without an ambulance? Another satellite for the candidate of continuity. On October 7 this will change," he said on Twitter.

In 2008 China launched Venezuela's first satellite - the Venesat-1, or "Simon Bolivar" - to carry communications gear.

The second spacecraft will take photographs that Chavez's government says will help it protect the environment, improve urban planning and crack down on illegal mining and drug cultivation.

Both satellites were named after 19th-century South American independence heroes.

The launch was beamed to big screens at a street party in Caracas's museum district, where Chavez was mobbed by supporters when he arrived earlier in the evening to make a short speech.

In the run-up to previous elections, the president has often unveiled many projects in an effort to impress voters. This time, his campaigning has been much less intense, partly because he has suffered two bouts of cancer since June 2011.

"YOUR FUTURE"

Chavez, 58, says his "bourgeois" foe will scrap his social welfare programs, such as subsidized food stores and programs that make cash payments to poor families with children.

"It's your future, young people, not mine. I've lived," he told thousands of red-clad supporters at a rally on Friday.

"Some people might be unhappy because of failures by our government. 'They didn't fix the road. The power went off. The water went off. I couldn't find a job.'

"Well, that may be true in some cases and I take the responsibility ... . One of my pledges is for greater efficiency in the management of the government."

Capriles wants to tap into that frustration over day-to-day issues. He says Chavez's government should have done much more, given the record oil revenue it has been spending.

"Don't you think 14 years is enough? Don't you think the time has come to move forward?" he asked at a rally on Friday. "The skinny one is here to make you a commitment and keep to it," he shouted, using the nickname given to him by some supporters.

Most of the best-known polls show Chavez ahead, but Capriles' numbers have been inching up and he has a small lead in two surveys. Polls are notoriously controversial in Venezuela and public opinion shifts quickly.

Investors expect Capriles to end a five-year nationalization drive if he wins, and reduce state intervention in the economy.

Chavez has vowed to strengthen his oil-financed socialism if he gets six more years in office. That will likely mean new confrontations with the private sector, and more support for the president's leftist allies in the region.

Venezuela's widely traded debt has risen as Capriles' poll numbers inched up. The price of its popular Global 2027 bond has climbed by more than 3.5 percent in the past week alone.

Wall Street would like a more business-friendly leader in Venezuela, although Chavez's government has never given any sign of defaulting on the country's debts.

ATLANTA (AP) ? Atlanta police officers broke up an altercation Saturday evening between two groups at the seventh annual BET Hip-Hop Awards, but no arrests were made.

Police spokesman Carlos Campos said officers responded to the scuffle at around 7:30 p.m. in the backstage area of the awards show, held at a downtown civic center. Campos said there were no injuries or shots fired.

Police have not released the identities of those involved in the scuffle.

The altercation took place around the same time as a tribute performance to hip-hop mogul Chris Lighty, who committed suicide last month.

BET officials told The Associated Press that the awards show was not interrupted.

Kanye West, who received the most nominations with 17, didn't attend the event. The show will air on BET on Oct. 9.

Rapper LL Cool J paid homage in remarks to Lighty, who he says helped shape his career and many others in hip-hop. After Cool J spoke, rappers Q-Tip, Fat Joe, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott and 50 Cent took the stage to perform.

The show was highlighted by several freestyle sessions that included rapper T.I., B.o.B., Snoop Dogg, E-40 and Cassidy. Others who performed included Rick Ross, P. Diddy, 2 Chainz and Future.

Rapper T.I. presented legendary rapper Rakim with the "I Am Hip-Hop Icon" honor. 2 Chainz won the People's Choice award, and Kendrick Lamar came away with Lyricist of the Year award.

Northern Ireland police mount major security operation for key parade

    BELFAST | Sat Sep 29, 2012 9:11pm BST

BELFAST (Reuters) - A major parade that Northern Irish politicians and security forces feared could spark fighting between Catholics and Protestant passed peacefully on Saturday after police mounted their biggest security operation in 20 years.

Some 30,000 Protestants marked the centenary of one of the most historic events in a province scarred by decades of sectarian violence, the signing of a pact by half a million of their ancestors opposing the introduction of devolved government in Ireland.

Eight Protestant Unionist organisations, including members of the Orange Order, marched through Belfast to celebrate, twice passing a Catholic church where violence had recently flared up.

More than 1,000 members of the British security forces were among 3,600 people killed during 30 years of the "Troubles" in the province which has a minority Catholic population.

The violence between mainly Catholic nationalists and pro-British Protestants was largely ended by a 1998 peace deal, but sporadic violence has grown in recent years and a far smaller march earlier this month incited three nights of rioting.

Most parades across Northern Ireland pass peacefully each year but violence often breaks out when marchers cross or pass close to rival communities, particularly during the divisive summer marching season which is nearing its conclusion.

Hundreds of police officers were outside the Catholic church as 2,000 Protestants and bandsmen passed peacefully by as their march began and again when they walked by on their return leg without incident.

The Parades Commission, the body that decides whether or not marches can take place, ordered bands accompanying the loyalist marches to play only hymns as they walked by the church.

It also restricted to 150 the number of Catholic protestors, who waved black flags and held banners urging respect for their church.

Sinn Fein, the former political wing of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) which now shares power in the local assembly with its former Unionist foes, said it was unhappy with the behaviour of a number of bands.

Marchers also gathered at Belfast's City Hall, where the Ulster Covenant was signed, and marched 10 kilometres (six miles) to Stormont, the home of Northern Ireland's power-sharing government where religious services, music and dancing were held.

Italian business greets prospect of 2nd Monti term

MILAN (AP) ? Italian business and church leaders on Friday warmed to the prospect that Premier Mario Monti might stay on for a second term, while politicians insisted the post must return to a political leader.

The head of the Confindustria business lobby Giorgio Squinzi said the primary concern was having a "solid, trustworthy government with credible people and that has a political base." He said Friday that a second Monti mandate "is one of the possibilities."

Monti hinted Thursday he could stay on for a second term under the right circumstances. Italy is heading to elections next spring, and experts say the failure of any party to win a clear majority could clear the way for another Monti mandate.

Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, speaking from the Paris Auto Show, said a continuation of Monti's administration "would be a step forward for the country," lending credibility and removing uncertainty.

Avvenire, the influential newspaper of the Italian Catholic bishops' conference, called Monti's declaration "a useful step, another service to the country" and a "strong signal to the parties in a moment of maximum loss of credibility in the political system."

Monsignor Mariano Crociata, secretary-general of the Italian Episcopal Conference, said "we favor any solution that could bring an adequate and speedy resolution to the crisis."

Monti is a devout Roman Catholic and has met with Pope Benedict XVI on numerous occasions since taking office.

Monti was tapped last November to head a government of experts to steer the country from financial disaster. His government has passed a raft of reforms aimed at cutting spending and waste and increasing competitiveness of the economy by weakening professional castes and streamlining bureaucracy. His nonpartisan standing has made it possible to get Italy's divisive politicians to back the measures.

He also has burnished Italy's image abroad, and has won the trust of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Barack Obama.

Monti has made it clear he will not run for office as it would only weaken his ability to push through reforms, and would only accept a second term only if asked by the parties after elections. In that case, the government is likely to be comprised of politicians in Cabinet posts, instead of experts in the current technical government.

Most politicians, including former Premier Silvio Berlusconi and the head of the Democratic Party Pierluigi Bersani, have remained firm that when the technical government's mandate expires in the spring, politics will take over.

The situation that favors a second Monti government would be the failure of any party to win a clear majority, "which is not unlikely," said James Walston, professor of political science at the American University of Rome.

A poll published this weekend in Corriere della Sera showed that about half of Italians ? disenchanted with persistent political scandals ? were undecided and planned not to vote.

If the major three parties split the vote and were forced by the election outcome to form a grand coalition, "that is a scenario that favors a second Monti term," said Roberto D'Alimonte, a political science professor at Rome's LUISS University.

The outcome will be influenced by a new electoral law that is being held up by disagreements over what percentage of a bonus the top-vote winner will get in an effort to solidify a majority in Parliament.

D'Alimonte also suggested that the markets could also force Italy's hand, if borrowing costs on Italy's enormous debt pile grow ? particularly in the period after elections when a government is formed.

"The markets vote, too, not just Italian voters," D'Alimonte said. "This is a time of mixed sovereignty.'

US extreme skier Plake among avalanche survivors

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) ? Renowned American extreme skier Glen Plake says he feels lucky to be alive after surviving the weekend Himalayan avalanche that killed at least eight people, but he's heartbroken that he could not save two friends.

Plake is a champion hot-dog skier who has appeared in many extreme-skiing documentaries, including 1988's "The Blizzard of AAHHH's," and also is well known for the tall mohawk he wears on the slopes. He had planned to ski down Mount Manalsu, the world's eighth-highest mountain, after reaching the summit.

"I was awake in my tent reading my Bible. ... The tent began to shake. We thought it was the wind but in fact it was an avalanche," Plake told reporters Wednesday at the Katmandu airport after returning from the mountain in a helicopter. "It was like an earthquake; it was like a tsunami."

Though he said he is "probably the luckiest person in the world," he was unable to find his friends and climbing companions, Remy George Lecluse and Gregory Ugo Costa, both of France.

"You are doing everything you can do because your friends' lives depend on your next action," he said. "Unfortunately everything I did proved to produce nothing. At that point, I had to think about my own life and start preparing."

Lecluse, Costa and a third person are still missing from the avalanche that swept the tents on Mount Manaslu at an elevation of 7,000 meters (22,960 feet) before dawn Sunday.

Nepalese mountaineering officials say eight bodies have been recovered: Fabrice Priez, Philippe Lucien Bos, Catherine Marie Andree Richard and Ludovic Paul Nicolas Challeat of France; German Christian Mittermeyer; Italian Alberto Magliano; Spaniard Marti Roirg Gasull; and Nepali Dawa Dorji.

Many of the survivors have returned to Katmandu, Nepal's capital, and have abandoned their plans to climb the mountain this season.

Sunday's avalanche came at the start of Nepal's autumn climbing season, when the end of the monsoon rains makes weather in the high Himalayas unpredictable. Spring is a more popular mountaineering season, when hundreds of climbers crowd the peaks.

Mount Manaslu, which is 8,156 meters (26,760 feet) high, has attracted more climbers recently because it is considered one of the easier peaks to climb among the world's tallest mountains. Avalanches are not very frequent there, but in 1972 one struck a team of climbers and killed six Koreans and 10 Nepali guides.

Starlets pumped to help Weitzman fight cancer

NEW YORK (AP) ? When you are a hot young starlet in Hollywood, you often get what you want. For Nikki Reed, that meant goose-bump calfskin, and for Chloe Grace Moretz, it was a menswear-inspired design. They are two of the celebrities to work with footwear designer Stuart Weitzman to craft shoes to their specs to help raise money for ovarian cancer research.

Weitzman has a long history of working with stars, and he finds many of them to be "frustrated fashion designers."

"It doesn't surprise me when they make requests or have ideas. They have a desire to create what they wear and what they look like," said Weitzman. "It would be surprising to me if they didn't want to have more input and try design."

The Young Hollywood Cares collection was co-designed this year by Moretz, Reed, Brooklyn Decker, Julianne Hough and AnnaSophia Robb.

Weitzman recalled Moretz's inspiration: "She told me as a kid, she would wear her father's wingtips and oxfords. ... And she wanted to make a shoe like her dad's that was sexy, high and wearable."

Other styles include Decker's gold metallic cap-toe black multistrap ankle boots, and Robb's black pony-hair stiletto pumps with burgundy satin piping.

This is the second round of collaborations, following last year's successful fundraising effort of $80,000, which was done without much promotion or publicity, Weitzman said.

"I want to be more visible," he said. "I have learned it's hard to ask people for money and it's harder to get them to give it, but if you have fun and make some noise, you can rattle it. You'll buy something, even if it costs a little more, but why not for a good cause?"

Proceeds from the collection benefit research at the Folkman Institute/Vascular Biology Program at Boston's Children's Hospital.

Should you move or remodel? - WordPress.com ? Get a Free Blog

Deciding whether you should move or remodel is a big decision. The most important things you need to consider, before you make this decision, are the four things you can?t change:?

*Your home?s value compared to the rest of the neighborhood
    * How much you love your neighborhoodThe size of your lot
    * The cost to move your stuff to a new house?

Just about everything else ? remodeling costs, the hassle of living in a construction zone, or the ability to live happily without one more bathroom ? is a personal preference.

?1. Will remodeling make your home better than everyone else?s?

To make the right move-or-remodel decision, you have to know:??????????????????????

*Your home?s value. Easy. Just ask a Realtor? to estimate it and tell you how it compares with the value of the other homes in your immediate neighborhood. Ask your Realtor? what your house will be worth after the improvements too.

*Your neighbors? home value. Hit some open houses. Seeing the inside of area homes will inspire you; help you make good choices about finishes, room sizes, and how much to spend; and, admit it, entertain you.

*Your remodeling costs. Once you?ve got your renovation vision, get a quote from a home improvement contractor or, if you?re remodeling it yourself, tally the costs of the items on your supplies shopping list.

?*Then add the remodeling costs to the value of your home. If the number you get is more than 10% above the average value of homes in your neighborhood, you?re over-improving and probably won?t be able to sell for what you put into the remodel.

?2. Do you love where you live?

Want to keep your kids in the same school district, but can?t find or afford a bigger, better house? Love the neighbors? Have an easy commute to work? Stay put. If you?ve soured on the traffic, the neighborhood?s crime rate, or the nosy neighbors, move on.?

    3. Do you have room to expand?

If your remodeling plans include increasing the overall size of your home, the size of your lot may be the deciding factor in whether to move or remodel. If you live in a 1,500 sq. ft. ranch on a 3,000 sq. ft. lot, you might be able to add a second story to turn it into a 3,000 sq. ft. two-story, but you?re not likely to add 1,500 sq. ft. at ground level. And if you have a septic tank and well, the location of those will limit how and where you add onto your home (or cost you a bundle to move).

?4. Can you afford to move?

Consider these moving costs: closing costs for your existing home, shipping your household goods, buying window treatments and possibly furniture for the new house, costs to fix up your existing home before the sale, higher utility costs (if your next house is larger), insurance cost differences, and property taxes.

?For help with making the final decision on whether to move or remodel, contact your local Realtor?.

Exercise does a body -- and a mind -- good

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? We've heard it time and time again: exercise is good for us. And it's not just good for physical health -- research shows that daily physical activity can also boost our mental health. But what actually accounts for the association between exercise and mental health?

A new article in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, explores whether certain psychosocial factors may help to explain the benefits of daily physical activity for adolescents' mental health.

Karin Monshouwer of the Trimbos Institute in the Netherlands and colleagues at Trimbos and VU University Medical Center specifically wanted to examine two existing explanations for the link between exercise and mental health. The self-image hypothesis suggests that physical activity has positive effects on body weight and body structure, leading to positive feedback from peers and improved self-image, and ultimately improving mental health. The social interaction hypothesis, on the other hand, holds that it's the social aspects of physical activity -- such as social relationships and mutual support among team members -- that contribute to the positive effects of exercise on mental health.

Monshouwer and her colleagues surveyed over 7000 Dutch students, ages 11 to 16. The adolescents completed validated surveys aimed at assessing their physical activity, mental health problems, body weight perception, and participation in organized sports. The researchers also gathered data on the adolescents' age, gender, and socioeconomic status; whether they lived at home with their parents; and whether they lived in an urban area.

The researchers found that adolescents who were physically inactive or who perceived their bodies as either "too fat" or "too thin" were at greater risk for both internalizing problems (e.g., depression, anxiety) and externalizing problems (e.g., aggression, substance abuse). Adolescents who participated in organized sports, on the other hand, were at lower risk for mental health problems.

Confirming both the self-image hypothesis and the social interaction hypothesis, adolescents' body weight perception (i.e., "too heavy," "good," or "too thin") and sports club membership each partially accounted for the relationship between physical activity and mental health, even after taking adolescents' backgrounds into account.

These results suggest that certain psychosocial factors -- body image and social interaction -- may help to explain at least part of the connection between physical activity and mental health. The researchers acknowledge, however, that other factors, such as the physiological effects of exercise, are probably also at work.

"We think that these findings are important for policymakers and anyone who works in healthcare or prevention. Our findings indicate that physical activity may be one effective tool for the prevention of mental health problems in adolescence," says Monshouwer.

Monshouwer and her colleagues hope that future studies will be able to examine similar questions while following participants over time. Such longitudinal studies could help researchers to understand how physical activity type and context might influence the relationship between exercise and mental health.

China, Japan stand their ground in island row

BEIJING/TOKYO (Reuters) - China claimed islands at the core of a row with Japan as its "sacred territory" in talks between the two countries' foreign ministers, Xinhua news agency said on Wednesday, as neither side showed any sign of backing down in a long-festering feud.

Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba urged China to exercise restraint at what he called a tense hour-long meeting over the dispute, which triggered violent anti-Japanese protests in China this month and is threatening ties between Asia's two biggest economies, Japan's Kyodo news agency said.

Xinhua said Yang reiterated China's "solemn position on the issue of Diaoyu Islands, which have been China's sacred territory since ancient times".

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura told a news conference in Tokyo the two sides had agreed to keep talking.

"There is no magic bullet in foreign diplomacy. We need to hold talks through various channels taking into account of broad perspective," Fujimura told a news conference in Tokyo.

Sino-Japanese relations deteriorated sharply this month after Japan's central government bought the isolated East China Sea islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, from their private owner, sparking the anti-Japan protests across China.

In a sign of the economic fallout, Japanese automakers Toyota Motor Corp, Nissan Motor Co Ltd and Suzuki

China's meetings with Japanese diplomats - at the United Nations and a day earlier in Beijing - suggest Beijing does not want tensions over the island chain, believed to be in waters rich in natural gas deposits, to lead to a rupture in relations.

But the unyielding tone of China's published remarks suggests that the row is far from over. Beijing has repeatedly called the islands its "sacred territory since ancient times".

"The Japanese move is a gross violation of China's territorial integrity and sovereignty, an outright denial of the outcomes of victory of the world anti-fascist war and a grave challenge to the post-war international order," said Yang, according to the Xinhua summary of his comments.

    DOMESTIC DYNAMICS

Sino-Japanese ties have long been plagued by China's bitter memories of Tokyo's military aggression in the 1930s and 1940s as well as present rivalry over regional resources and clout.

The row coincides with a once-in-a-decade leadership change in China, while Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's ruling party faces a drubbing in an election expected in months, domestic dynamics that are make it hard for either side to retreat.

Noda is under fire from the main opposition party, which picks a new leader and possible next premier later on Wednesday.

Japan, which says the islands' purchase was meant to fend off a more provocative bid by the nationalist governor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara, to have his metropolitan government buy them, is trying to keep communications channels open.

China postponed a ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic ties with Japan, but an official at the Japan-China Economic Association said Toyota Motor Corp Chairman Fujio Cho and Hiromasa Yonekura, chairman of Japanese business lobby Keidanren, and other representatives of Japan-China friendship groups would attend an event on Thursday in Beijing.

Patrol vessels from the two countries have also been playing a tense game of cat-and-mouse in the waters near the disputed islands, raising concerns that an unintended collision or other incident could escalate into a broader clash.

Build Your Own iPhone 5 Dock for $1 (Because Apple Won't Make One For You) [Video]

Build Your Own iPhone 5 Dock for $1 (Because Apple Won't Make One For You)Build Your Own iPhone 5 Dock for $1 (Because Apple Won't Make One For You) Apple isn't making a dock for the iPhone 5 and its lightning connector, but DIYer Casey Neistat shows us how to make a simple one out of wood for only $1.

It certainly isn't as pretty as Apple's old docks, but it'll certainly get the job done if you aren't the type of person that likes loose wires at their desk. All you need is a few scraps of wood and some miscellaneous screws (in fact, if you have a workshop, you probably have everything you need on hand already). Alternatively, you can buy one of the third party docks that will inevitably come out, but for now, this is a workable (and super cheap) solution. A simple coat of paint would probably keep it from looking so janky, too. Check out the video to see how to put it together.

Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin speaks with officials about a call as his team met the New York Jets during their NFL football game in MiamiReuters

The NFL has updated its clubs regarding the negotiations with locked-out game officials via a memo from general counsel Jeff Pash.? It looks and feels like a press release.

Adam Schefter of ESPN has obtained the document, which addresses the recent negotiations between the two sides and addresses the areas of discrepancy that remain, from the perspective of the league.

Pash explains that, in addition to last week?s discussions, that parties met for six hours on Saturday and nine hours on Sunday.? The session on Sunday involved a federal mediator, who has no specific power over the two sides but who has tried to get them to reach an agreement.? Commissioner Roger Goodell participated in the weekend discussions.

The memo explains that significant gaps remain on all issues, and that the officials? most recent proposal is ?unacceptable in numerous important respects.?

Pash explains that the officials now want a shorter deal, at six years instead of seven, along with only a 10-percent reduction in their request for increased pay and a ?ratification bonus? aimed in part to pay the locked-out officials for the weeks that they have missed.

And here?s the summary of the league?s position, which perhaps can best be described as being for the benefit of the media, since the clubs already should know what was being offered: ?Game officials on average earned almost $150,000 in 2011. Prior to the start of the lockout, we proposed a 7-year deal that would have increased average game official?s compensation more than 7 percent to just over $161,000 in 2012, and further increase that average to more than $189,000 by 2018. In addition, we have offered a generous defined contribution retirement plan, with average contributions of $16,500 in 2012, increasing to more than $22,300 per game official by 2018. Officials also receive numerous other benefits, including severance equal to one year?s game fees and postseason bonus, a period of guaranteed ?time off? from the end of the season through mid-May of each year, first-class air travel, and
partial reimbursement for medical insurance for officials who do not have insurance through their other jobs.?

Perhaps the line that will raise the most eyebrows appears in the final paragraph: ?We recognize that the current officials are under unprecedented scrutiny and we are committed to do all we can to help them continue to improve.?

They?re not improving. And the replay officials (who aren?t replacements) and the league supervisors (who aren?t replacements) aren?t helping.

The broader message?? The league is still circling the wagons, waiting for 61 or more of the 121 locked-out officials to collectively cry ?uncle? and to then find a lawyer to draw up the paperwork that will recite, in the appropriate jargon, ?uncle.?

Mapping the mobile landscape: What's growing on the Apple tree ...

The iPhone 5 has already seen record preorders and Amazon began shipping two new 7-inch tablets last week with the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD scheduled to leave the warehouse at the end of November. In addition to those offerings there is already a successful 7-inch tablet from Google and Asus, the Nexus 7. And of course the much hyped redesigned Windows 8, on both ARM and x86 powered tablets, is coming next month.

For a consumer in search of mobile computing Nirvana this may be the closest thing to paradise. For others the confusing array of offerings is perhaps more like purgatory. Most of them are similar from a technical perspective but they actually offer significantly different experiences. In fact it's fair to say that what consumers are looking for (and at) isn't the silicon and glass or any other of the bits and pieces that go into a mobile device.

The experience is what they're paying for and each product line varies greatly in that respect. The look and feel of a particular app or bit of content may be hardware bound, but the overall experience is largely shaped by the tablet maker's business model. Over the course of several articles we will take a look at what those models are, how they affect the smartphone and/or tablet experience for the user, and both the advantages and potential pitfalls they present.

Apple - the 800 pound mobile gorilla

It seems only natural to start where the modern mobile device market did - with Apple. Thanks to their well known dedication to secrecy and selective "unofficial" leaks Apple seems at first glance like a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. They seem to frequently be ahead of the curve when it comes to innovative product designs and yet their detractors accuse them of being unoriginal and accuse them of intentionally limiting their customers via product design.

The reality is somewhere in between. While it's true almost every bit of technology inside almost every new Apple device is borrowed from elsewhere, that's what most innovation is. Likewise while a product like the iPhone may not be an obvious evolutionary step from the smartphones which preceded it, the demand for devices with the various features it offers had to exist already or else it wouldn't have been such a big hit right out of the gate.

Apple's business primarily revolves around two basic philosophies. The first is a dedication to being a hardware company. That's different from almost every other successful mobile device vendor. They leverage the availability of low cost components from China with a not insignificant investment in ARM processor design and production to create products with almost unthinkably high profit margins. It's hardly surprising it's the iPhone, rather than the iPad, which launches at this time of year considering it's the most profitable device they sell.

    Control or convenience?

A less obvious consideration, and one which is often mistaken for arrogance and an obsession with control is that Apple devices, for almost the entire history of the company, have basically been designed for people who don't care about or for computers. That makes sense considering that's a big part of who Steve Jobs was. As hard as it may be for a die hard technology devotee (some would say nut) like me to understand, most people don't want a computer.

They want Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Netflix. They want email, instant messaging, and media playback. The fact you need a computer for these things isn't a feature to most people. It's an inconvenience. Apple's solution to this dilemma is making their products look and feel as little like computers as possible. In terms of iOS that means providing basic apps for their mobile devices which offer a consistently favorable user experience more like traditional gadgets like the iPod than a "real" computer.

That experience does not come without a price though, either for Apple or their customers. They don't just want to provide that experience, they also want to force third party app providers to follow their lead. On occassion Apple uses their relatively strict app approval procedure to kill software which could significantly improve the iOS platform. Customers, while generally happy, may find themselves frustrated by

the lack of competition or choice for anything Apple considers a core feature.

Another hidden price for iDevices is the lack of microSD storage which was standard for feature phones and smartphones alike long before the first iPhone was built. While it's nice to have a lot of internal storage, it lacks the flexibility or cost effectiveness of simply popping in a tiny expansion card. On the other hand it's quite cost effective for Apple since it means higher profits for models with more storage. This is less significant today thanks to their cloud storage offering, but those two things don't always solve the same problems.

In the long run Apple's closed platform could pose a significant challenge for the company. If they fail to recognize an important change in the market or don't let third parties innovate enough they could lose ground in the market fairly quickly. Likewise relying on high profit margin seems like a strategy which cannot possibly remain viable forever. Just like other countries which have ruled the manufacturing roost in the past, the cost of manufacturing in China is guaranteed to rise eventually.

    Apple and the content industry

Bolstered by their success in the music world, Apple also seems to be hedging their bets on the status quo in copyright law being maintained. Over the past few years, particularly since the iPad's debut, Apple have put a lot of effort into building solid relationships and even alliances with traditional content producers from the entertainment and publishing industries. It's only a matter of time before content prices are forced down precipitously, as we're already seeing in places like recorded music, or else content owners are forced to sell their companies to someone with a better grasp of history and fundamental economics.

Apple seems to have bought into the publishing industry's vision of controlling ebook prices from the top to avoid cannibalizing physical book sales. That's not to say Apple believes it will work. More likely they see

it as a way to dominate ebook downloads the same way they do music downloads. Certainly it gives them an ally against the current ebook market leader, Amazon, who most major publishers see as not just a competitor, but also an enemy of their entire industry.

That's the same strategy which didn't work for record labels a decade ago and isn't working for the movie and TV industries now. It won't work any better for publishers for the same reasons. An ebook doesn't have same value as a printed book any more than early printed books had the same value as a handwritten manuscript. A seller can set any price they want but the buyer has final say over the value. If you price an ebook (or song or movie) above its value people won't buy it. If you refuse to compete with your own products someone else will.

Apple went to great lengths working out exclusive deals with US textbook publishers early this year. They hope to stimulate widespread adoption of the iPad in schools. It's great in principle, and mobile devices are clearly the future of education, but you would be hard pressed to find a school in the US with the resources to spend hundreds of dollars per student for iPads plus potentially another $100 - $200 as recurring expense (once again each and every year) for textbooks. Most schools today are finding it difficult to make payroll without staffing cuts.

Since Apple has also gone out of their way to make sure none of those textbooks will be usable without an Apple device there isn't even an option to buy cheaper hardware or reuse existing Windows machines to reduce the initial buy in. The benefit to Apple and the publishers is obvious. They maintain high margins - publishers would actually increase theirs by eliminating printing and distribution. But somebody has to pay for those profits and even most of the richest private schools would find that difficult, if not impossible, to do.

    Innovation is still the key

On the other hand Apple still has some big advantages in the form of the massive install base for iOS and their willingness to continue innovating. The downfall of most market powerhouses is not what their competition does, but rather what they fail to do. While Apple is as guilty as any company out there of abusing the patent system to erect barriers to competition, they haven't yet fallen into the trap of using that as a substitute for innovation.

Like most wildly successful market leaders Apple is potentially their own worst enemy in that regard, but they won't be taking themselves out of the race today or likely even tomorrow. If you buy an iDevice you may be disappointed with the cost of media or DRM on ebooks but for most people the overall satisfaction level seems to more than compensate. That's not entirely Apple's doing either. The majority of people who consider those things deal breakers already know an iPhone or iPad isn't for them.

What's less clear about Apple's future is to what degree their insightful product decisions were dependent on Steve Jobs' unique perspective. It's true Jobs wasn't a technical wizard or a prophet of technology as some people seem to believe. He was, however, a gifted CEO who got the chance to learn things most don't thanks to his exile from Apple and inability to repeat their success. The Steve Jobs who left was fairly typical for successful businessmen. He saw his success as mostly a result of his personal genius. He came back appreciating the value of other people's ideas.

If anything the genius of Steve Jobs was in sharing other people's visions and figuring out how to push the creative people around him in the right direction. Can current CEO Tim Cook do that? If not what can he do to provide the same level of leadership? Was Steve Jobs a unique phenomenon or did he build a corporate culture capable of continuing his legacy? Nobody knows yet but you can be sure we will find out within the next two or three years.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard says expects Israel to launch war

DUBAI (Reuters) - Israel will eventually go beyond threats and will attack Iran, the commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards was quoted as saying on Saturday.

As speculation mounts that Israel could launch air strikes on Iran before U.S. elections in November, Mohammad Ali Jafari told a news conference that the Jewish state would be destroyed if it took such a step.

"Their threats only prove that their enmity with Islam and the revolution is serious, and eventually this enmity will lead to physical conflict," Jafari said when asked about Israeli threats to strike Iran's nuclear facilities, the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) reported.

"We are making all efforts to increase our defensive capabilities so that if there is an attack ... we could defend ourselves and other countries that need our help with high defensive capabilities."

Jafari's comments, made at an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) military exhibition, come as Israeli leaders have increased their rhetoric against Iran.

"A war will occur, but it's not clear where or when it will be," Jafari was quoted as saying on Saturday. "Israel seeks war with us, but it's not clear when the war will occur."

"Right now they see war as the only method of confrontation," he said.

Israel, which bombed an Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1981 and launched a similar strike against Syria in 2007, has threatened to do the same in Iran if diplomatic efforts fail to stop the nuclear work it believes is aimed at getting weapons capability.

Iran, which says its nuclear work is for peaceful means, has said it could strike U.S. military bases in the region as well as Israel if attacked.

"If they (Israel) start something, they will be destroyed and it will be the end of the story for them," Jafari said, according to ISNA.

SKYDEX makes blast-absorbing plastic sheets that line military vehicles like the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected trucks used by American personnel in Iraq.

By Bill Briggs, NBC News contributor

In the lobby at SKYDEX Technologies, just south of Denver, there?s a stunning, inside-facing wall that approaching visitors can't see.

Departing employees, however, can take long, slow gazes at all the imagery blanketing that wall: in short, it?s a glimpse of the immense, human cost of war.

Pictures show a U.S. Army soldier missing one full leg below his hip and a portion of his second leg under the knee ? body parts abruptly shredded by an IED in Afghanistan two years ago. That soldier, still on active duty, is undergoing rehab at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

?We placed the photographs there, a lot of photographs,? said Peter Foley, chief technology officer?at SKYDEX. (The pictured soldier prefers to remain anonymous). ?You can?t help but look at those photos and not think about how not only his life has changed but his family?s lives as well. SKYDEX people see it as they leave. It will often make us turn around and go back inside and work harder.?

A look at the innards of the SKYDEX "Convoy Deck," now installed on the floors of most MRAP vehicles used by U.S. military forces in Afghanistan. If it looks like the inside of a sports shoe, there is good reason.

Foley said the?company?s patented, blast-absorbing plastic sheets now line?more than 18,000 military vehicles ? including Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) trucks used by American personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq. Similar cushioning materials developed by SKYDEX also reinforce the floors of military interceptor boats and the padding in troop helmets.

In an IED attack that?s large enough to carry a 100 percent chance of seriously injuring a soldier who's riding above the explosion, the odds of bad wounds drop to 10 percent if that vehicle?s flooring is covered with a SKYDEX application, according to Foley.

The core of this danger-soaking science involves thin mats filled with thermoplastic, opposing ?twin hemispheres? that collapse into one another during a nearby bomb burst, sucking up the rapid, violent energy waves emitted by an IED.

When the company?s ?convoy decking? is viewed from the side, however, it somewhat resembles the guts of a sports shoe.

There?s a logical reason for that bouncy, about-to-dunk look.

?We started the company thinking we were a sporting goods material,? Foley said. ?That?s my background. I?m actually a biomechanist.?

Plainly put, that means he is a sports scientist trained to apply the laws of mechanics and physics to human performance.

?The early inventors (of the SKYDEX material) were early guys at Nike, pioneers in the shoe industry. This absorbs so much more shock than foam,? which has lined many athletic shoes over the years.?

But within about six months of the 2001 launch of SKYDEX Technologies, the company was approached by researchers from the Marines, the Army and the Navy ? ?to work on different problems the military had,? Foley said.

    Among those problems: IEDs.

?Because we absorb so much force, it makes sense for them to go this route,? Foley added.

?Yes, we use SKYDEX blast-attenuating floor mats in many of our MRAP vehicles,? said Elizabeth Robbins, a Pentagon spokeswoman. ?A majority of the MRAPs in Operation Enduring Freedom have them installed.?

?It is accurate to say that both in test results as well as the results from IED events in theater, the technology demonstrates the ability to significantly reduce forces to the legs of people in the vehicles,? Robbins added.

At SKYDEX, the research-and-development team is examining next-generation head protection for American troops, Foley said, ?really looking at what we can do to prevent injuries from blunt trauma and blast waves.? ?(The company also employs 11 veterans).

But the whirlwind career detour Foley has taken - from trying to engineer a more buoyant sports shoe a decade ago to trying to protect the heads and bodies of soldiers today - isn?t lost on a man who has his name on more than 10 patents.

?The veterans who work here were, by and large, boots on the ground. They have a difficult time telling their stories,? Foley said. ?So it?s really easy to remember why we?re doing this.

?I?m the son of a retired Navy captain. Like a lot of older parents, he will often talk a long, long time on the phone. Then we?ll talk about SKYDEX, what it can do to save live and limbs. And he?ll suddenly tell me that I?ve got to get off the phone and go to work.?
